What do you think about ‘attachment parenting’?
I was reading a book named ‘The Continuum Concept’. It was strange, but the main point I got from it is that you need to carry your baby at ALL times, always in a sling, and pretty much never let your baby cry by meeting his/her needs right away. She says that NOT letting your kids sleep with you in bed and NOT carrying them around is what forms clingy children. Well I always felt the opposite. (You know, momma’s boys for example in grown men, LOL)
Anyway, what do you think about attachment parenting? I carry my baby in a sling, but right now she’s in the crib sleeping while type on here and watch Spongebob in the living room..lol..I guess that makes me a bad mom!
That is true, mom of Bethany Gale..and what of working moms? They can’t possibly hold their babies at all times or take them to work!
I think this kind of parenting makes it impossible for your child to gain a sense of independence. If you are constantly carrying them, they won’t develop necessary motor skills like rolling over, grabbing their feet, examining their hands, crawling, or walking. If you constantly get what they want before they have a chance to think about how to get it, then they lose the function to think creatively and find ways to get things for themselves.
Now, when babies are small, they need the extra attention. You have to change, feed, and clothe them whenever they need it, but it’s impossible to do this once they start reaching an age when they determine they want a certain toy or they want to crawl across the room. They need to learn to do things for themselves or they’ll never have happy fulfilling lives.
