Diapers Burp
Question on duration of one session of breast feeding for a 5 week old infant?
My baby boy feeds only for 6-7 minutes on one breast. I burp him and then diaper change him . I try and offer the 2nd breast, he does not want it. He started doing this now for a week. Before that he would feed on both breasts atleast for 10-15 min.
I am not sure if this is an issue or normal.
He also sometimes cries after feeding. I am using a nipple shield and wondering if that had anything to do with this situation?
Babies become more efficient at removing the milk from your breast as they get older. It is normal for the time he spends on each breast to decrease. My daughter would nurse forever when she was a newborn, then it gradually got to be faster (less time), now she prefers to nap on the boob, so we’re back to long sessions again.
Anyways, you will want to wean your child from the NIPPLE SHIELD as soon as you can. If you do not, your baby will refuse the breast without the shield and then you will have to nurse with the shield everytime, which could become a big problem if you are out somewhere and do not have a shield with you or if you accidentally lose the shield. Trust me, you will want to get rid of the shield if at all possible!

Sorry, missed the second part of the question! Do you let him end the feeding himself or do you take him off of the breast after a certain amount of time? Does he have gas?
If you think he has gas you can help him expel it by getting him in different positions to put some pressure on his tummy (on his back and pump his legs like riding a bicycle, on his tummy and let him push up, across your knees supporting his head face down and pat his bottom while you gently bounce your knees up and down, etc.)
He may also become frustrated if your flow slows down (after a few mins of nursing), my daughter went through a stage of this, try switch nursing, where you switch breasts back and forth during the feeding, if he is pulling off around 6-7 min, switch to the other breast, then when he pulls off and fusses on the second breast switch back to the first until he is done feeding.

Why Diaper Bags Make a Perfect Baby Gift
Before you have children you really have no idea what the deal is with a diaper bag. I must confess, I didn’t even know it was something that left the house. I just assumed it was just there to fill up with diapers and never considered the dozens of things that can go inside of it. With the explosion of babies in the news it seems there are dozens of new gifts that are out there and shown in magazines. The field of diaper bags has gone along for the ride and it seems are everywhere now. Different colors, styles, features are all the rage. New parents can not believe all the steps necessary to take baby out for the day. There are many things one takes to make it a positive outing and make the fun of taking baby out and about, well, fun. You can always get baby some clothing as a baby gift or a little toy, but to really help mom and dad out a nice, designer diaper bag like Petunia Pickle Bottom or Skip Hop do the trick. Below I will list some examples of what parents take to go out with just one child let alone more.
1. Multiple Diapers, baby needs to keep clean and they can certainly go through a diaper every couple of hours.
2. Some paste or cream to keep the toosh fresh. You don’t want a rash.
3. Wipes to wipe up.
4. A changing pad to lay baby down to do the diaper change or change clothing.
5. A little toy to distract baby while the change is going on.
6. Some extra clothing for many reasons.
7. Food when baby gets hungry.
8. Water or formula for when baby needs a drink.
9. A cell phone and keys.
10. Burp Cloths to help with the feedings.
11. Sun lotion so baby doesn’t get too much sun.
12. Blankets in case a chill comes on.
13. Benedryl in case of a reaction.
14. A journal for the numbers of the doctor etc.
These are just some small examples of all things it takes to leave the house and have a great day. Until you are a parent or a caretaker of kids I don’t think it is apparent when you see people pushing strollers on the streets what exactly is in that bag than hangs on the handle bars or is thrown over mom or dad’s shoulder.
As far as picking out a great baby gift there are so many choices. From personalized baby gifts like blankets and robes to more practical gifts like bottles and liners and mobiles there are many choices, but make sure if they don’t already have a diaper bag that you consider that in your options. If you have the ability to get a classy designer bag that may even be more special because while baby may get a lot of gifts it’s nice for the parents to feel they can still have a little style and not be people wit stained shirts and exhausted eyes.
