Should I get a car seat or booster seat for a 6mth old?
My son is almost 7kgs and we need to buy a carseat for him, would you recommend a 8kg – Booster seat? For example: Hipod Senator, MaxiRider II, The Explorer? These look more suited to a larger child to me, and though they say from 8kg, I’m thinking he still needs more padding than that… However, it would be more cost effective in the long run, and if its met Australian safety standards then it should be well safe for an 8kg baby, shouldn’t it? He’s been using a hired Safe n Sound baby capsule that pulls out so far. What would you recommend as the next step?
not sure what the Australian laws are but here in Canada a child MUST be rear facing until they are 20lbs and 1 year old. I would recomend a convertible car seat. I have one made by Safety 1st that can be rear facing with the 5pt harness, forward facing with the 5pt harness and a booster seat with the seat belt. We paid about $130CAD for it and is wonderful!
Good Luck

Kids Car Seats Information
If you have children who ride in your car then it is essential that they each have kids car seats to ride in. We recommend that you still own a child car seat for each of your children even if you haven’t got a car as you never know when you may need it. Kids car seats must be used by law to ensure children are safe whilst travelling at all times, so there is no excuse for them travelling without them. Without the correct child restraint for your child, they are not safe riding in your car.
Taking note of your child’s weight and height is important for choosing which type of kids car seats they require. Once your child is either 135cm tall or 12 years old (depending on which is first) they no longer need to use kids car seats and can use the adult seat belt. The main types of kids car seats are; rear facing seats, convertible seats, forward facing seats, and booster seats.
When it comes to buying a suitable child car seat, you should know what weight and height your child is. If you do that then shopping for the car seat will be easier for you. It’s a good idea to have a look through reviews for car seats so that you can see which ones are popular and highly recommended. Another thing you can do which could help is ask your family and friends if they know of any car seats they would recommend. You may find choosing a car seat much more simple if you get an experienced mum to help you out. If you are going to buy a car seat on the internet then have you friend come round to help you pick one out.
We feel that it is important you buy a brand new kids car seat and not a second hand one as you can never be completely sure of the history of the seat. Even if a person is telling you that the car seat they are selling second hand has never been in a crash, you still never know for sure how it was used etc. One that has saved a child in an accident before, might not be as effective in a second accident.
You will be spoilt for choice when it comes to buying your child a car seat as there are loads to choose from. The reason some kids car seats are more expensive is due to some ‘added features’ to generally add extra comfort or convenience. Added features could be extra padding or a more simple ’seat belt route’. So don’t worry too much about which price range you choose. We recommend you go for a car seat made by a well known brand that you can trust.
